The History of Sbarro
Like many other restaurants, the name “Sbarro” had been derived from the name of the founder (or in this case founders) of the restaurant—the founding owners of Sbarro being Genaro and Carmela Sbarro. Having moved from Italy to America, the couple had set up the first Sbarro in 1956.
Being Italian, Genaro and Carmela Sbarro knew their way around pizzas, as it didn’t take Sbarro’s to become a hit, opening its first mall-based location in 1970 at Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Shopping Plaza. Even with its immense support from its fans, Sbarro wasn’t free of troubles either, having faced bankruptcy as well. Even so, Sbarro still stands strong today, having over 600 locations across 33 countries.
