The History of Nando’s
Nando’s tale started in 1987 in Rosenttenville, with two men—Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin, and one Colonial Portuguese-African takeaway named Chickenland.
You might have thought that the Peri-Peri chicken was something created by Nando’s, but this isn’t the case, as, in actuality, Chickenland had served this dish first. After a taste of Chickenland’s Peri-Peri chicken, Duarte and Brozin had been so impressed by the meal that they bought the restaurant for R80, 000 rand. Soon after, they renamed the store after Duarte’s son, which is how the name Nando’s came about. As the two men predicted, the Peri-Peri chicken had been a massive hit to the public that by 1989, the restaurant had three outlets in Johannesburg and one in Portugal.
Even today, the popularity of Nando’s doesn’t seem to wane, having over 1000 branched across 35 countries as of 2017.
