The History of Domino’s Pizza USA

Several decades ago, the Monaghan brothers, James and Tom, bought a small pizza restaurant called Dominick’s. They ran the restaurant for some time until James sold his share to Tom. Being the sole owner of the business, he then purchased and invested in 2 more pizza restaurants. He intended three of his restaurants to share the same branding. However, the owner of Dominick’s did not permit him. 

Hence, in 1967, Tom renamed his business “Domino’s Pizza, Inc.”. The logo of his company was born around the same time, with the three dots representing three of his restaurants. He wanted to add a new dot to the logo every time a new store was launched. However, due to his fast-growing business, his idea faded as Domino’s Pizza restaurants were mushrooming across the country. 

The pizzeria launched its 200th franchise in the United States during the late seventies. A decade later, Tom brought his business to the international level by opening a store in Winnipeg. In 1983, the 100th store in Vancouver, Washington, was launched. Domino’s Pizza first introduced non-pizza items on the menu in the 1990s. Some examples include the breadsticks and chicken wings. 

The business continued to grow. In 1985, Domino’s Pizza opened the first stores in the United Kingdom and Japan, respectively. It announced a global sale of around three billion dollars in 1996. Two years later, Tom, the founder of Domino’s Pizza, decided to retire. He sold about 93% of his business to Bain Capital Inc and officially signed out from the daily operations of his business.
