The History of Carl’s Jr.

Formerly known as Carl’s Drive-In Barbeque, this full-service restaurant started with truck driver Carl Karcher and his wife, Margaret Karcher. Setting up the first store at 1108 N. Palm St. in 1945, the turning point of this couple’s business came in 1950 when they added hamburgers in their menu.

The birth of Carl’s Jr. that we’re all familiar with began in 1956, where Karcher opened the first two Carl’s Jr. Restaurant in Anaheim and Brea. If you’ve been wondering why Carl’s Jr. has a junior attached to it, the answer is, it is because they were smaller versions of Carl’s Drive-In Barbeque.

Due to the popularity of the Carl’s Jr. Menu USA, this fast-food chain’s branches increased rapidly, having more than 100 Carl’s Jr. locations in Southern California by 1965. Even today, its growth doesn’t seem to stop, as it now has locations across the globe—in countries such as Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Turkey.
